GeoMultimediaViewer

David Gordon

GeoMultimediaViewer is a program for interactively browsing media collections as 3D virtual scenes. The project reflects an interest in data visualization, virtual worlds, digital collage, and Cubist painting. Using embedded GPS and other image metadata, GeoMultimediaViewer arranges digital photos and videos based on the spatial locations where they were taken. While existing programs use image matching to merge photos into seamless panoramas or virtual objects, in contrast, PhotoScene uses geographic proximity to cluster images into panoramic collages, leaving the original photos unaltered. By preserving, rather than smoothing out, image boundaries, the program's hybrid panoramic collages offer a window onto a photographer's working process. This format also allows fast navigation of image collections spanning geographic areas of different sizes and dimensions, while providing the flexibility to alter parameters of the scene while seeing the results in realtime.
